— ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Our Services

In the UK between 2%- 5% of school aged children have ADHD. According to NICE it is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in the UK , which is characterized by early onset usually in the first five years of life, by the presence of a persistent pattern (at least 6 months) of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that has a direct negative impact on academic, occupational or social functioning. The presentation is not caused by other disorders such as autism or affective disorders1.

These children usually present with difficulty concentrating during lessons and difficulty finishing tasks or homework. They are easily distracted which may lead to disruptions in class and they may get into trouble at times which can have an impact on their self-esteem and self-confidence. They are on the go, fidgety, and unable to sit in their seats. They may fall out with friends easily and struggle to achieve their full potential. They may also get involved in risky behaviours and have learning problems.

If undiagnosed they may struggle to achieve their full potential both academically and socially. Therefore, early diagnosis and management is vital.  ADHD is treatable with medication and this approach has been used with good results. There are different medication options available, and the choice of medication depends on multiple factors.

ADHD Assessment Pathway

01.

Screening Questionnaires

Once you have contacted us to book your appointment screening questionnaires will be sent to your child’s home and school and you will be asked to return them or bring them to your appointment.

02.

Assessment Appointment

Your appointment will be with the Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. This will be with the child and parents and will help diagnose ADHD and associated comorbidities. The assessment is caried out using the gold standard diagnostic tools and criteria. If more information is required following this assessment, we may need to organise for a member of our team to carry out a school observation with your consent.

03.

QB Check

QB Check is a computer based continuous performance test assessment tool for children and young people aged 6 years and above. It’s an evidence-based test which measures the symptoms of ADHD to contribute to the assessment process  and can be used later on to monitor response to treatment.

04.

Diagnostic Report

This will be produced by the clinicians involved in the assessment and will detail the assessment process and its findings and list recommendations for management based on these findings.

05.

Feedback/Management Appointment

This will be offered to the child/young person and parents and will be with the Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist where the management plan will be discussed, and treatment options offered including medication for ADHD if indicated.
