Child & Adolescent Mental Health

Childhood and adolescence are periods of rapid brain growth and development. This is the time of life that equips the individual with the cognitive, social, and emotional skills that will shape their adulthood and future. It is therefore critical that any emotional, behavioural, or mental health issues are recognised and managed effectively as they arise.

According to the WHO

  • Globally, one in seven 10-19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder. However, these remain largely unrecognised and untreated.
  • Depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents.
  • The consequences of failing to address adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.
  • Children and adolescents with mental health conditions are particularly vulnerable to social difficulties, educational difficulties, risk-taking behaviours, and physical ill-health.

Impact of Covid-19 pandemic on child and adolescent mental health

The last two years have seen an unprecedented level of of instability and uncertainty particularly for children and young people with the repeated school closures, exam cancellations, social isolation, and the impact of the pandemic on family members’ health and employment. Children and young people’s mental health has been disproportionately affected with a significant rise in emotional and mental health difficulties.

We recognise that the disruption to health services including CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) has been very challenging for families and has led to an increase in waiting times to access help. Our clinic promises to deliver timely assessments with flexible appointments. Families can choose between face to face clinic appointments and remote appointments via video or telephone where it is clinically safe and appropriate to do so.

As our clinic is led and staffed by specialists in child and adolescent mental health, our assessments are always carried out keeping the young person’s neurodevelopment as well as their physical health in mind. Please note:

Healing Young Minds is not a 24/7 service which means that we would not be able to manage mental health emergencies/crises or any conditions likely to require intensive treatment. Therefore, we do not accept referrals for deliberate self-harm and anorexia. For any of these difficulties please see your GP for a referral to NHS services. If you are unsure please contact us to discuss.
